ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:

Anne Rosenberg (Playwright/THIS WAY OUT) is a writer and editor whose work has appeared in Jelly Bucket, Reader’s Digest, Stone Highway Review, Double Reed, the Four-Cornered Universe, the Toronto Star, the National Post, Marketing, Upbeat, Beach-Riverdale Mirror and Mind, Body and Spirit. She divides her time between Ontario and the Azores, where she and her photographer husband spin their stories.

I've been welcomed into a really fun and challenging experience of The Strawberry One-Act Festival. They’ve welcomed me and given me support on so many levels. I wrote This Way Out ten years after reading a newspaper article in 2006, which described one family’s deportation to the Azores from Toronto. As a mother and her teenage son were taken to their flight, the boy’s girlfriend reached out for him, crying. Over the years, I wondered what had happened to the boy and his family. I clipped out articles and scribbled down the barest threads of ideas, not knowing what form they would take. In 2012 and 2015, I traveled to the Azores with my husband, a Canadian-Azorean, to work on writing and photography projects. During that year, I began researching the deportations in earnest, interviewing some of the families, though I never found the teenage boy.

Winning the Best Play award would allow me to further polish This Way Out and expand it into a full-length play. I hope Nelson’s story moves people, scares them a little. And I hope it spurs them to action. In a full-length version of the play, I wouldn’t want to see Nelson again; I’d want to hear the stories of the deportees who have been there for years. Until then, I’m writing more plays, more stories. I don’t ever want to stop working.
